Developing creative solutions that reach the world

As a Product Developer at BAT based in HUB Southampton, Ben uses his passion for product design to creatively come up with new ideas for our tobacco heating product (THP) devices. His determination to take his concepts across the globe makes him a valuable member of our team. Part of his role is to engineer new solutions and prototypes for our THP device, glo. This is something he thoroughly enjoys – making the most of our transformation to offer a range of potentially reduced-risk products to adult consumers and using his creativity to change an industry.

In order to reach his goals, Ben relies on a network of support around him. At BAT, that’s something he feels is best about working here. “One of the best things about BAT is that everyone is up for helping you. Everyone’s an expert in some way and they’ll jump at the chance to tell you about their area. It allows you to gather knowledge from a whole range of different people. Now I’m a fully-fledged member of the team, we have a great dynamic. We’ve all got our areas but when we come together, we each contribute. Everyone has a really good collective brain.”

There have been many moments when Ben has felt he truly belonged here. But one in particular stands out: when his designs became a hit on the other side of the planet. “A big moment for me was when I worked on a project designing the packaging for an innovative product. I designed the artwork and packaging, sent it off to print – and in six weeks’ time, there were hundreds and thousands of boxes full of the product ready to be launched in Japan. Boxes and boxes of something I’d created. We watched our consumers open them on a live stream in Japan and that was amazing to see. Seeing something you’ve created become a reality is really satisfying.”
