Taking ownership of your career

Bilge is an important leader at BAT, heading up IT strategy. It’s her job to bring emerging technologies to the BAT landscape, harnessing the power of digital in order to add real value to the business: “This can be in the products, but it’s also about how we use technology in running our business. Using it to run finance operations, the supply chain function and to engage with our consumers as well.”

Here, Bilge has found a forward-focused environment that stimulates her growth: “I used to work in consulting. It was similar in terms of traveling and learning a lot of new things. But I think with BAT it's different in the sense that I have accountability for delivering solutions, as opposed to doing advisory work. I still get to experience the new innovative technology and how we can use it, but then I have a lot more accountability working for the company itself, and in making it happen.”

Bilge has some high hopes for her career in IT and has already made big strides at BAT. There are great IT foundations here but there is a freedom to explore new IT solutions that can improve process and efficiency. If there is a better way of doing something, you won’t be held back. But the main thing for her is having the right experience to back up her position, to give her the connections and knowledge to succeed: “In the future, I'd like to further my career in IT. I have an ambition to be a CIO one day, to help me get there I plan to broaden my experiences in IT. I would love to work in one of our regions, the America’s or in Asia Pacific to continue my work in partnering the business and engaging more of the senior business stakeholders.”
