Believing in the power of teamwork

Donal is the Head of the Innovation Development Centre. He knows what it takes to lead a large team and inspire their success. For him, the role revolves around the people he’s helping to train and encouraging them to transform tobacco. “My role involves supporting the Product Development teams in manufacturing prototypes and samples for consumer testing. I lead nearly 40 people as a part of that, with five people in my senior team.”

Every day, Donal collaborates with and manages the expectations of a whole range of people – from his team members to his stakeholders. “A lot of the people working in my teams would have spent many years in combustibles. Helping them make that transition across to being able to support potentially reduced-risk products (PRRP) means identifying their training needs. We’re also bringing in new people with new ideas and new thinking. Being successful here is very much to do with resilience, passion and ambition. It’s having good stakeholder engagement and working well with people. It’s being able to manage up and manage across.”

As well as believing in himself, Donal believes in the success of his team and of his people individually. That’s what makes him a truly great leader – his commitment to the development of others. “The opportunity to help people realise their potential really motivates me every day. For some people, they don’t even realise what they’re capable of. I’m very proud of the team in what they’ve achieved.”
