Leading the way for great achievement

Edgar has a long history with BAT, having started with us in 2003 in Mexico. Since then, he’s worked his way through a number of roles, and now works at HUB Southampton, leading a team on Product Innovations. “I work across all combustible products here. The aim of our work is to take a concept and make that project or concept a reality, into something that delivers for adult smokers. We take it all the way from concept to launch.”

Edgar’s role is a global one, one where he works with sites in America, Europe and Asia. That collaboration across the whole business is important to him, but mainly it’s the communication he has with his team and within R&D that he values the most. “The local market and global environments are quite different. The local market is very fast-paced and you’re there to make decisions right in the moment; you need to act quickly. In a global position, like in the UK, you need to see the full map and what’s going to be in the best interests for the business as a whole. That means collaborating with my team, as well as other functions too.”

For Edgar, it’s important to give his team the opportunity to take on new challenges – something he strongly believes all leaders at BAT should do. “Our leaders need to be risk takers, because there will always be many unknowns in innovations. We need people who can make informed decisions in an ever-changing environment.”
