It’s the people that make it

As a Senior Commercial Finance Manager for vapour, Gary acts as a business partner for the marketing team that deals with these Next Generation Products. Any questions the marketing team has around profitability and forecasting, he’s the man to go to. He knows that people are the heart of everything we do here at BAT. And one of the joys of that is the ability to work closely with industry leaders across different specialisms to find innovative solutions for every challenge we face: “My job is all about looking at the feasibility of new products and new markets. We heavily support the marketing function, but in order to support them, we also collaborate with R&D, Operations, and Legal and External Affairs.”

For Gary, what really inspires him is the amazing relationships he’s developed with his co-workers: “The part I enjoy most about BAT is probably the people I work with. I’ve always worked with great people, and it's those people who challenge you and make you do more than you expect. The guy that I sit next to, I’m best friends with, and I used to be captain of the football team. It was a great way to meet people from around the business and it helped when you met them in work by already having that connection.”

Developing close, collaborative working relationships allows Gary to achieve more in his role. When travelling to other offices or factories, he often finds it easier to build rapport and bring back insights on how we can optimise our performance in other markets: “There’s always the opportunity to go to HUB Southampton – our state-of-the-art science, innovation and research hub in the heart of Southampton – to meet the R&D teams, exploring the research and products in the pipeline. I went there to see how that side of the business operates, and if there's anything we can leverage for the rest of the business.” It’s one of the most exciting things about life at BAT. Having that space and scope to identify new opportunities for collaboration and also the freedom to pursue them. Impacting the business with your own ideas and adding value your way.
