Defining your own success

Mariolina is a Senior Sourcing Manager in our central procurement team, buying goods and services for different functions, supporting HR, facilities, marketing professional services and more: “Alongside two colleagues, I manage a sizeable budget. It takes a lot of collaboration and a proactive attitude to manage such an important area of work – no two days are the same. One day I can be involved in a deep negotiation, another day I could be concentrating on market research. Other times, I work on the contract side, close to the legal team. There’s a lot of variety in terms of tasks, activities and challenges.”

It’s this variety that Mariolina is looking for in her career, and she believes there are far more opportunities to progress here than your average business: “Even though BAT is a big FMCG company, it's very structured. It's got the dynamic of a company that is established, but with the mentality of a start-up. Even within the space of two years, I’ve had the opportunity to manage different projects and gain experience in different fields. If you want it, you can define a clear career path for yourself. That, again, is not something that you find easily in other companies. Here, there is a clear understanding of what you have to do to reach point B from point A. You’re in control of your learning experience.”

And she’s not only talking about variety when it comes to her work. There are so many ways in which we keep life diverse: “The culture at BAT is one that allows you to create whatever is in your mind. In my specific case, I created an international lunch for the Procurement team, which is a way to celebrate our full diversity here. I’ll be doing a Christmas edition with the idea that everyone bakes food from their own country and shares it. If you’re looking for somewhere there is space for your dynamic ideas to become a reality – where you can be challenged – this is absolutely the place.”
