Knowing what it takes to lead

As Head of Digital Marketing, Shweta is currently helping us to redefine our digital business. As a leader, she’s determined to bring in colleagues who can learn from each other and create a leading digital marketing practice. “My job is to explore the vision for our digital team and I believe we should not do digital simply for the sake of it. It should fit within the business objective. That means using digital to enhance our Transforming Tobacco ambition. All of this is geared towards enabling us to leverage digital successfully.”

A vital way Shweta will conceive our digital future is by identifying the right people for the job: “The team of people we’re getting together have certain characteristics, but there are a couple of big traits. They’re open to learning – they almost behave like sponges, keen to absorb information. Digital is changing so quickly, what you know today might be different four weeks from now, so keeping updated with what's happening is a very important skill. The second big skill that my team demonstrates is translating learnings into languages that the business understands. It’s about taking the whole business along with us on our digital journey.”

From hiring a new team of technology experts to bringing about new, inspiring learning opportunities, Shweta’s passion for change is helping us to transform for the future. Her strong belief in the power of digital and data comes through in her fascination for new technology. “I will always be fascinated by the disruptive nature of technology,” she says. And that passion has helped her to become a great leader, someone who believes in her people and who gives them the freedom to drive their careers: “We’re not creating stars, we’re creating a constellation.”
