Adapting to change so we can transform an industry

Victor works for the Human Resource's Department within the Talent Acquisition team as a People Analytics Manager. His story is one that proves what you can achieve at BAT if you’re the type of person who is able to adapt to change: “I came from a very technical area. I was an Aeronautical Engineer with no clue about HR. Then, somehow, I found myself here and I’m leading the analytics space for HR. In four years, they've moved me around to help give me a better understanding of HR.”

It’s Victor’s impressive adaptability that has seen him succeed in his projects all over the world: “Within one of the projects that we did, I wanted to go and train the teams we’ve deployed in different markets. I've been to Denmark, Romania, Russia, Kiev, Belarus and Turkey. Some of my friends are in Cape Town now. Personally, besides the UK, my favourite country to go to would be Spain, or one in East Asia or the Americas. I moved to the UK and it took me about two days to adapt. If you can call that adapting. Elsewhere, I would enjoy exploring the culture further.”

Our diversity is one of our strengths. Victor believes you can learn a lot from how other countries work, complementing their techniques with his own and vice-versa: “It's quite interesting the way that different cultures interact with the company and the company interacts with them. If you’re doing some work with people from Spain – where I'm from – it's actually different from doing it with Germans or Austrians. And it’s completely different from doing it with people in South Korea! It’s fascinating seeing different mind-sets and ways of approaching things, but ultimately, we’re one team and all agree you need to be passionate about what you do to succeed here. You need to have a lot of drive. And self-confidence, believing in your ideas and your way of working.”
