Learning to broaden the scope of your experience

Zara is in the commercial side of our business as a Sourcing Manager for potentially reduced-risk products in Procurement. In her role, she supports her colleagues by sourcing new technologies and the best suppliers for the R&D community. Working with our transformation vision firmly in mind, she develops and invests for new categories within potentially reduced-risk products. This means assessing what can be better and what can be future-proofed. It means learning continuously about how the industry is changing. And it means forming strong relationships with the technical community.

“I’m working on an exciting project at the moment. We are developing a new device, which is going to be a bridge between two current innovations - we call it a ‘hybrid’. We hope to change the market with this new device, even though there are a lot of challenges ahead of us. Fortunately, we have a dedicated team, and everyone is motivated to bring it to life.”

Before turning to Procurement, Zara started her career in Southampton and worked in the technical side of our R&D business for 12 years. That background has been especially useful when moving over to our commercial side, with her knowledge of product technology and performance. That knowledge has given her a lot of confidence in what she does, but what motivates her most isn’t her experience, it’s the results of that hard work. “What motivates me is the satisfaction of being part of a team that is developing new products that will be used by millions of consumers.”

“BAT is a fantastic company to work for. It’s a very big company so there are a lot of opportunities to learn and develop both on the technical side, and on the managerial side.”
