British American Tobacco has an exciting opportunity for a Legal and External Affairs Manager to join our team in Kinshassa.


Our new colleague will drive market engagement strategy and building the corporate reputation with key internal and external stakeholders to help shape the local business environment and execute global engagement strategies as appropriate.


Principal Accountabilities:


  • Understand business priorities and develop an appropriate engagement strategy and plan for Government Affairs, Corporate Affairs and Anti-Illicit Trade
  • Manage execution of the internal & external strategy and plan
  • Engage with key stakeholders in the market
  • Build the corporate reputation in DRC in particular with business and regulatory stakeholders
  • Provide relevant legal support and advice to the Business to mitigate regulatory and legal risk
  • Manage the internal control environment to ensure compliance with Group policies, positions and standards
  • Manage all audit requirements including relationships with external auditors as required
  • Manage all legal documents, contracts and agreements


Leadership Capabilities:


  • Ability to identify and engage stakeholders and build awareness of the external environment inside the company
  • Lead the Legal, Regulatory, Corporate Affairs and AIT agenda within DRC
  • Strong business acumen, advising the business how to deliver results whilst managing business and reputational risk
  • Ability to advocate the Business agenda in a straightforward and compelling way to internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to articulate legal risk and recommend relevant actions to mitigate  


Functional Competencies:


  • Broad knowledge of the tobacco control issues and deep knowledge of the specific local environment
  • Ability to understand and shape the external environment
  • Credibility and ability to engage and influence senior external stakeholders
  • Clear and compelling written and verbal communication skills
  • Able to deliver robust local campaigns
  • Able to identify legal risk
  • Understanding of other business risk, regulatory and reputational


Knowledge, Skills & Experience:


  • A degree in Economics, Law, Public Policy, Political Science, International Relations
  • 5 years legal practice experience
  • Working knowledge of public affairs, trade blocs and fiscal policy generally
  • Ability to apply basic project management principles to campaign execution
  • At least 5 years’ work experience in a similar role within Government, international institution or FMCG
  • Excellent interpersonal and both oral & written communication skills
  • Appropriate level of maturity to provide credibility at senior levels externally and internally
