FUNCTION: Legal and External Affairs

LOCATION: Gauteng, South Africa


The role is responsible for developing and driving communication, reputation & sustainability strategies with internal and external stakeholders to support BAT’s commercial agenda in South Africa and SAM markets. This role also drives the enablement of a simpler, faster operating model and support BATSA’s transformation agenda.


Reports to: Head of Government Affairs for the South Africa Area

Geographic Scope: The role covers South Africa, SAM West- and East Cluster as well as Zambia and Zimbabwe. Corporate Affairs      includes Sustainability and Transformation management.





External communication & Corporate Brand:


  • Develop and implement a media strategy that supports BAT’s commercial and corporate agenda and strengthen regulatory engagement campaigns
  • Act as a media spokesperson for BATSA
  • Proactively analyze and interpret the external environment and events potentially impacting the business, and manage remedial actions to ensure the reputation of the business is not adversely affected
  • Ensure alignment and enhancement of the corporate brand in accordance to the global corporate brand guidelines
  • Manage the development and, when necessary, the execution of business continuity and crisis communication plans
  • Proactive engagement with external stakeholders and media houses




  • Drive the development and implementation of the communication strategy that will amplify the local sustainability strategy, including ESG initiatives, and the Transformation agenda, and the reporting thereof
  • Actively communicate externally about BATSA’s Transformation and B-BBEE strategy
  • Actively drive and deliver the Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) and Corporate Social Investment (CSI) communication strategy, in alignment to the global, regional and SA/SAM policy objectives and business priorities and ensure appropriate governance and reporting mechanisms are in place and adhered to.


Key Success Factors:


  • Leading an external team of communication specialists to manage media relations and internally deliver on appropriate communication platforms.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the concept of ESG including best practice standards of the Sustainability Reporting environment in SAA; within BAT globally, and within BAT internally.
  • Position BAT as the preferred external contact for tobacco and new categories in each market
  • Deliver corporate communication plans for each market



  • Analytic and strategic thinking and strong stakeholder management skills are required.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communications are essential.
  • Simplify and clearly articulate complex concepts/subjects, demonstrate resilience. Local languages are required.
  • Ability to build and maintain good relationships with internal and external stakeholders through engagement and collaboration
  • Demonstrates agility by adjusting quickly to new scenarios and challenges, and put new insights and learnings to practice
  • Well-developed leadership-, multicultural skills are essential and are equally required as change management experience to drive A Better Tomorrow transformation and growth agenda.
  • Up to 10 years’ experience in a consultancy or in-house function in the areas of Corporate Affairs and Sustainability, including spokesperson experience.
  • Extensive business experience and experience in the tobacco industry will also benefit the applicant
  • The jobholder must be able to demonstrate an understanding of the political, regulatory and media environment in SAA and demonstrate an ‘all around’ communications competence.
  • The individual needs to demonstrate the ability to act on his or her own initiative, applying good judgement.
  • The individual must demonstrate well developed influencing and problem-solving skills; with the ability to work well with peers and senior management, inspiring trust and confidence.
