The Legal Counsel for R&D is responsible for the provision of legal and regulatory advice to the R&D function and in particular with regards to new products and innovations including our range of potentially reduced risks products (PRRPS) ensuring that all product-related legal/regulatory requirements are considered and adhered to, working closely with the product developers, scientist and the marketing team. Counsel will be a key partner to the innovation team and act as center of expertise to provide support to end-markets and regional Legal and Corporate Affairs teams. 
This is an exciting role in the commercial team focusing mainly on new products and innovations.  It is a unique role as it allows input and insight throughout the whole product cycle, from idea to development to deployment, giving in-depth understanding of the business and the products. 

 
Key Accountabilities

  • Manage agreements with R&D suppliers, including research, development, services and evaluation agreements, NDAs, and all other contractual arrangements as required (third party and intragroup), and advising on associated structuring, strategic and governance considerations. 
  • Identifying and mitigating legal risk in proposed and operational commercial arrangements, including in relation to intellectual property, competition, standards of business conduct, data protection and sanctions, advising on resolution of contractual disputes, and advising in connection with contract termination.
  • Provide all aspects of legal support and regulatory advice to the R&D function, including updates on new and potential regulations relevant to all the portfolio, in particular with regard to new products and innovations, including rules on new materials, thresholds and notification to authorities. 
  • Act as Legal CoE for product regulations, coordinating communications and cascading information to end-markets, Regional Legal and Regional Corporate Affairs in relation to current or upcoming product regulation for existing portfolio and in particular for new products.
  • Manage law firms’ input, training, and budget to support product compliance/recharge to other functions/markets if appropriate.  

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

  • Qualified lawyer senior with experience in commercial and regulatory law. In particular, relating to contract drafting and negotiation. 
  • The ideal candidate should have some in-house experience (via secondment or previous placement), and knowledge of product and consumer regulations.
  • Hands-on and flexible attitude, sound commercial judgment, and ability to work under pressure and to cope with unexpected and varied demands.
  • Good awareness of legal issues relating to competition and IP to enable potential issues to be identified at an early stage of an initiative, and an understanding of legal duty of care issues in the context of product liability.  
  • Proven experience of working at senior levels internally and externally.
  • Scientific background and language skills are a plus but not required. 

 

Location

  • London or Southampton would be ideal. Flexible working agreements.
