The Strategic Science and Technology (SS&T) – is the ideas factory of British American Tobacco, focused on creating an array of products and proposals that offers greater choice to our consumers.

Principal Accountabilities


  • Lead rapid ideation and problem-solving activities, design / build / test / iterate – to identify quickly the technologies and products which have step change benefits.
  • Create novel solutions to real world problems in software controlled mechanical systems.
  • Apply sound analysis and critical assessment to each product or technology – to determine / define and implement appropriate corrective actions to bring projects back on track. This could involve the development of new working procedures, methods or working practices using objective evidence, presented for Management/Technical Review & Approval;
  • Contribute to the future product portfolios and technology roadmaps – help identify and define new products and new product categories.
  • Day to day operational management (up to 2 direct reports - entry level engineers), including technical guidance, performance management and career development.
  • Manage projects that meet all success criteria - performance / functional criteria / business / consumer, within demanding project timescales.
  • Work with a multidisciplinary team, supporting the wider Strategic Science & Technology teams and giving technical input / guidance / mentoring as and when required.


Knowledge, Skills and Experience


  • At least an Honours Bachelor Degree in relevant engineering discipline – Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, Product Engineering, Electronic Engineering or related field.
  • Proficient in engineering of consumer type products (including medical at a Mid- Senior level)
  • Software experience (Python, Matlab, C/C++, or similar)
  • Able to create novel solutions to real world problems in software controlled mechanical systems.
  • Proficient and a strong desire and understanding of practical and methodical design development through prototyping, testing and evaluation of results.
  • Understanding of manufacturing - plastic injection moulding, metal forming, tooling and other manufacturing methods.
  • Previously managed a small team & allocation of resources
  • A deep-rooted passion for engineering / design
  • Broad appreciation for fundamental engineering – thermodynamics / fluid dynamics / mechanical systems / structure including FEA / Physics.


Desired or otherwise beneficial skills

  • Manufacturing experience in a FMCG
  • Experienced working in highly regulated products (e.g. medical products)
  • FEA – experience or working knowledge (embedded tools or standalone e.g. Ansys)
  • Understanding the importance of consumers and designing products that put the consumers first.
  • Ability to identify consumers unmet needs and creating proposals that cater for these requirements.
  • Other software or programming languages – Python / Excel macros / Minitab etc.




  • Base salary from £43,200 to £54,000 per year, depending of relevant experience
  • Bonus target 15% of annual base salary
