About the Placement Scheme
 
In the UK, we offer 12-months placement - starting 2nd September 2019 - opportunities to undergraduate students looking to gain practical experience within a vibrant and innovative industrial setting. As part of the scheme, you will be partnered with a mentor, have regular reviews with your Line Manager and work on projects that impact the business.
 
Training and development is provided throughout the placement with successful applicants having multiple opportunities to develop transferable skills in addition to gaining ‘hands on’ experience in a technical discipline.
 
As part of the scheme students get a chance to cultivate their independent thinking and problem solving skills in addition to working in and contributing to a team. Cross functional/department working and participation in other research activities is also encouraged, where appropriate. Previous work experience in a practical ‘hands-on’ role would be useful but not essential.
 
MAIN PURPOSE / REQUIREMENTS
 
We have a requirement for on undergraduate student taking part in a year in industry placement, we require the suitable candidate to be studying for a Degree in Product Design.
 
The Combustibles Innovation Team is focused on the proof of concept, proof of application, development and delivery of commercial solutions for new-to-world combustible products. This role covers all aspects of the product development lifecycle from ideation through to deployment. With a focus primarily on product and processing equipment design and development. 
 
The successful candidate will assist in the delivery of new Technologies and products in line with BAT's requirements to provide consumer relevant innovations.
 
In addition, the candidate should be a:
·         Creative thinker and problem solver.
·         Intuitive designer. 
·         Strong communication and presentation/report writing skills.
·         Be self-motivated to work both independently and in a team.
·         Able to work on multiple activities and deliver against agreed priorities.
·         Experience with Microsoft Office, Project, Visio, Prince2.
·         Have CAD experience (Solid Edge).
 
SPECIFIC WORK AIMS / TASKS
 
Responsibilities / aims include:
  • Work on BAT’s Global Drive Brands and get to understand BAT’s diverse product portfolio.
  • Play a key technical role, working on real products and solving real problems. 
  • The development of new to world prototype manufacturing machinery.
  • Helping to define quality equipment designs for new commercial products.
  • Working closely with product development teams.
  • Co-ordination of activities within internal teams and external partners.
  • Project planning and execution.
 
LEARNING AIMS
 
What the Intern will take away from experience:
  • Develop real world experience of new to world product / machinery development.
  • Develop understanding on how to create design solutions to address product quality and / or performance issues.
  • Understand how to operate as a collaborator with the wider R&D space to build robustness and technical capability.
  • Gain understanding of Patents / IP protection.
  • Exposure to wider technical teams within the BAT community.
  • Gain understanding of BAT best practive regarding product / machinery development.

Essential requirements
We are looking for undergraduates who are undertaking an industrial sandwich degree course.
 
Candidates will need to have:
• A relevant undergraduate degree (see individual placement opportunities), with a minimum predicted grade of 2:1
• The right to live and work in the UK
• IT skills e.g. use of MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint
