Job Purpose

 

The role is responsible for driving the strategy for Category Support ensuring the best science approach for BAT’s business needs is undertaken. Also, the Lead Analytical Scientist will drive a collaborative approach between Analytical, Consumer Product Safety and Project teams.

 

Principal Accountabilities

 

  • Develops and drives the strategy for the category support team
  • Identify in conjunction with the project teams the priorities and analytical requirement for current and future activities
  • Provides guidance on analytical science approaches
  • Leads peers in the identification, analysis and resolution of scientific problems
  • Monitors the scientific integrity of studies and projects, keeping stakeholders and management informed
  • Provides appropriate information into Strategic and Operational planning process
  • Provides coaching and guidance for the team on business implications and best practices
  • Ensures the laboratory-based scientists in Category Delivery have appropriate technical training and development
  • Key contact for above Category Support proposals and issue resolution from the project teams
  • Analyses technical capability and internal processes and identifies opportunities to improve/ enhance.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

 

  • Professional/academic achievement in Chemistry or a related physical science at Masters, MPhil or PhD level
  • Understanding of preparative and instrumental techniques applicable to the isolation and measurement of the chemical properties/ or trace level analytes in complex matrices
  • Awareness and understanding of the complexity of analytical method development and validation using complex instrumental analysis techniques (including GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, HPLC/MS, HPLC/MS/MS, ICP/MS)
  • Understanding of product design parameters and their effect on consumer and emissions and understanding of the impact of component materials on manufacturing
  • Evidence of competence in the effective application of formal and informal management, project and business tools and processes. (e.g. PRINCE2 Practitioner)
  • Ability to influence cross functionally and communicate in clear and simple terms
  • Demonstrable leadership skills, including evidence of effective change management and the development of others.
