Job Purpose


This role is responsible for supporting both R&D and the Patents team by assessing third party patents and communicating their potential relevance to R&D project teams. This will help inform R&D about the patent landscape in various technical areas, potential freedom to operate issues and provide intelligence on competitor activity and trends.


Principal Accountabilities


  • Support and work alongside the Device Engineering Patent Manager and other patent analysts handling the various search and analysis requests from the R&D and Patents teams
  • Undertake analysis of third-party patent rights to determine whether they will impact BAT’s current, planned and future innovation activities working in close collaboration with R&D and patent colleagues
  • Undertake patent landscape searching and analysis to support the Patenting Strategy Process
  • Support competitor intelligence activities by analyzing both BAT and third-party patent rights to determine key areas of competitor activity and trends
  • Communicate clearly and effectively the outputs from the analyses performed to key stakeholders
  • Ensure on time and in full delivery of the output from each R&D/Patents query
  • Ensure effective prioritization of queries. 


Knowledge, Skills and Experience


  • Physics, engineering (electronic/ electrical) background, at least to degree level - master in Intellectual Property Management is an advantage
  • Experience in analyzing scientific documents and summarizing key information derived from them
  • Demonstrate high levels of collaboration skills and ability to work with a range of stakeholders from both R&D and the Patents team
  • Advanced IT skills and the ability to work with and handle high volumes of complex data
  • Excellent attention to detail and a real interest in patents and learning how to undertake advanced patent searching
  • Excellent analytical, presentation and communication skills, in particular the ability to present complex information in an easy to understand form.




  • Base salary from £34,480 to £43,100 per year, depending of relevant experience
