What are the key objectives and expectations from this role?  

To develop and lead the foundational science behind nicotine and other actives in BATs 5-year strategy and their role in human effects based benefit and risk research, which will shape the direction and approach of this novel category for the business.


The role will lead a programme of foundational science, utilising internal capability and external ecosystem of partnerships, into actives aligned to BAT’s strategy, identifying their mechanisms of action, optimum routes of delivery and potential human effects to enable consumer-winning product propositions, ideally in a competitive way.


The role will also provide capabilities for assessing the role of non-chemical active means of delivering new stimulating experiences, such as digital, electronic, audio and visual and understanding how this can augment current and future product pipelines


The role will work closely to feed the requirements of the business into the internal preclinical human effects testing team and the scientific human research programme, refine study designs and communicate back out to the business key scientific insights to shape the future pipelines, regulatory strategies and investment choices.


What is the direct impact of this role on the team or organization?


The foundational science into actives and their role in human effects will be utilised in supporting BATs beyond tobacco product category strategy, in the first instance enabling product and brand launches in wellbeing and stimulation on the go and in the second instance identifying a competitive pipeline.


The foundational science into the role of nicotine in human effects will be utilised in strengthening our understanding of potentially reduced risk products.


Role directly delivers BAT’s core purpose of A Better Tomorrow, via the science and technical framework proving the reduction in public health impact of our business.

Geographic Scope: Global



  • Technical leadership of foundational science in the field of human effects.
  • Act as the key link between the New Sciences team and the remainder of the cross functional project teams, translating business requirements and technical insights
  • Evaluate the data generated on actives and products and utilise that data to support any associated regulatory pathways or identify any short, medium or longer-term consumer facing claims
  • In the case of actives other than nicotine, work with product development teams to identify and accelerate compounds or mixtures of compounds that could provide optimised efficacy against one of the three consumer need spaces of relax, sharp and boost
  • In the case of nicotine, work with product development teams to understand the impact of insights gained on human effects and the PRRP pipeline to facilitate consumers switching form cigarettes
  • Build the Intellectual Property and publications necessary to protect competitiveness in this space and contribute to a comms and or regulatory engagement plan
  • Identify partnerships, including ventures, that could accelerate the BAT strategy, in the area of Scientific Research, and drive the scientific due diligence and scientific agreements associated with them.



  • Have you worked in the field of human effects science?
  • Have you managed a complex programme of scientific studies?
  • Do you have experience of setting up 3rd party partnerships to conduct scientific research?



  • Strong leadership and project management skills, with proven track record of delivering short and long-range science programmes in the field human effects testing
  • Experience in designing and running scientific studies in the fields of chemistry, invitro modelling and human research (clinical or non-clinical)
  • Managed external collaborations with thought leaders, institutes, start-ups and multinationals to strengthen and accelerate the scientific programme
  • Line management; talent and budget (>£1Mn) management
  • Study design and interpretation in a relevant scientific field
  • Proven skills at scientific communication to technical and non-technical, internal and external audiences
  • Strong collaborative leadership, identification of external collaborations that can strengthen the scientific agenda
  • Minimally a BSc in a life Sciences discipline, and ideally an MSc/PhD in a related field.



  • Previous scientific experience in the field of actives beyond nicotine
  • Experience in developing or substantiating products related to the consumer need spaces of relax, sharp and boost.
