Job purpose

The responsibility of this role is to lead the successful development and delivery of consumer relevant Tobacco Heating Products (THP) within Hybrid platform.  Responsibilities will also include the development of a pipeline for Hybrid to deliver business and category growing initiatives to the market.
Through the application of people and strategic leadership, supported by sound scientific and technical capabilities the role ensures that THP products are delivered in line with NGP / THP strategy.

Principal Accountabilities
  • Lead the successful development and delivery of Hybrid device relevant products within the Tobacco Heating Products (THP) strategy
  • Direct the identification and implementation of continuous improvement plans for commercialised THPs
  • Support the NGP leadership team, their activities and departmental decision making as well as providing critique and challenge to the portfolio of departmental activities and proactively seek opportunities to improve cross-departmental delivery
  • Ensure a learning culture is fostered within development projects including effective project reviews and continuous improvement plans to optimise the product
  • Ensure that products are being developed in line with the agreed THP strategy, and that these products are managed effectively through pragmatic and robust project methodology and governance
  • Continually analyse short, medium and long term capability requirements, at both a Functional, Group Research & Development (GR&D) and technical business level, proposing and enacting solutions to rectify structural issues
  • Drive effective visibility, control and ‘risk based’ decision making across all the THP development activities through the lead and management of appropriate technical project governance, and through technical representation at commercial operational governance
  • Ensure product improvements are developed based on a clear scientific understanding of both the device, and its relationship with the user, with a deep focus in the consumable
  • Deliver Performance Dashboards, Key Performance Indicators and Management Information on time and to the appropriate stakeholder groups, assuming responsibility for the ongoing development of performance tracking and reporting
  • Ensure the right skills, clarity and direction are in place within the Technical Development Team to    support sustained, quality delivery On Time in Full (OTIF)
  • Responsible for providing effective leadership to the Development team - to include coaching, performance management and Career Development
  • Drive efficiencies in the synergies between technical and commercial workstreams to ensure that resources are aligned to support effective and efficient delivery of prototypes and ensure a rapid progression to commercialisation
  • Ensure all relevant processes are followed for good financial controls, Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S) standards, Technical Excellence and Good Research Practice as required by the corporate business and GR&D whilst seeking opportunities to drive improvements to the core business processes
  • Conduct ongoing Quality Assurance activities to support the performance improvement priorities
  • Continually seek opportunities to develop more effective and improved ‘ways of working’ within NGP, across functions and with supporting suppliers
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • Degree or equivalent in a engineering or related subject or equivalent
  • To have a knowledge and understanding of the key business activities relating to the composition, manufacture, product design and evaluation of products to meet consumer and commercial needs within legislative and operational constraints
  • In-depth technical knowledge of product development in consumer goods industry – particularly in hand -held battery operated products, manufacturing methods and certification process
  • In-depth knowledge of the product development process as it relates to technical requirements, lead times and NPI protocols
  • In-depth knowledge and experience of consumer-product insights and performance of THP products
  • Strategic planning and implementation skills
  • Excellent leadership, interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to influence key stakeholders very senior level
  • Excellent people manager - ability to manage and develop team members to senior




  • Base salary from £92,400 to £115,500 per year, depending of relevant experience
