Job Purpose   


To perform, coach and manage other team members to perform legal and toxicological ingredient evaluations in accordance with guidelines from the Product Stewardship Council (PSC) in line with the R&D Policy Framework, Corporate Positions and specific legislation. Actively interact with key stakeholders to ensure the vapour category requirements are met. This will include ensuring stewardship plans are implemented, reviewing ways of working to ensure processes are fit for purpose;


Principal Accountabilities


  • Prepare toxicological risk assessments from first principles for the assessment of new ingredients, materials, products or technologies.  
  • Responsible for the toxicological and legislative evaluation of newly proposed ingredients, materials, products and technologies to ensure the Consumer Product Safety (CPS) process for vapour is followed under the R&D Policy Framework.
  • Contribute to the development of strategies for toxicological evaluation (including testing requirements) for new technologies for review by the senior scientist within CPS
  • Ensures the confidentiality of all supplier information is maintained to ensure their trust, support and co-operation.
  • Provides appropriate technical training, coaching and supervision of team members to enable them to perform their technical roles.
  • Champions the continuing professional development of team members, and supports the CPS talent pipeline.
  • Identifies and improves working practices to meet organisational changes and business needs.


Knowledge, Skills and Experience


  • Relevant science background equivalent to 2nd Degree
  • Science degree in a biological or chemical discipline and an MSc in Toxicology (or another relevant subject) or equivalent.
  • Institution Membership Active member of a relevant professional body or Technical Institution
  • In depth understanding of the principles of Toxicology and Risk Assessment
  • Sound technical background in toxicological assessment of tobacco, food products, cosmetics or other relevant industry sector of consumer goods.
  • Evidence of successful team leadership and people management & development skills
  • Stakeholder engagement and networking skills




  • Base salary from £43,200 to £54,000 per year, depending of relevant experience
