Job Description:


The Lead Manager of Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) for the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company operations manages federal, state and local regulatory compliance and continuous improvement activities for the company’s largest manufacturing facility, research and development labs and several ancillary operations in the Winston-Salem, NC area. Primary responsibilities involve occupational health and safety compliance but will also include non-hazardous waste management, shipment of hazardous materials in compliance with DOT/IATA requirements and leadership of the site emergency response teams. This position reports to the Reynolds Senior EHS Manager and will support development, and implementation of Health and Safety policies, procedures, initiatives and programs. The job is based out of the Tobaccoville, NC facility immediately north of Winston-Salem, NC. 


Principle Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Manage programs that ensure sites maintain a continuous state of compliance with the company’s internal health and safety standards as well as applicable government agency regulations (e.g., OSHA, NCDOL, DOT, NCDHHS, NCDEQ).
  • Support development and review of the company’s health and safety programs and standards.
  • Accountable for the execution of health and safety programs such as lockout/tagout, hazard communication, electrical safety, working at heights, confined spaces, walking and working surfaces, hearing conservation, industrial vehicle safety, hot work, NFPA life safety, PPE, contractor safety and radiation safety.
  • Lead injury and near-miss investigations and root cause analysis to foster a zero-injury safety culture.
  • Prepare monthly health and safety performance metrics for internal reporting.
  • Review new projects and equipment for EHS risk and compliance to ensure  required controls and authorizations are in place prior to commissioning.
  • Develop and deliver safety training programs to ensure regulatory compliance to increase proficiency in safe practices among employees and promote safety consciousness.
  • Lead the EHS pillar team and activities for the site integrated work systems (IWS), a system for creating a zero-loss mindset and culture. This includes tools for risk assessment, safety observations and loss analysis.
  • Oversee the site’s Safety Committee program to foster a caring culture where safety is ingrained as a core value.
  • Conduct site safety inspections and audits to identify existing or potential safety and health hazards and recommend corrective or preventative measures where indicated.
  • Identify and inform management of compliance issues, safety risks and improvement opportunities from the findings of safety inspections and audits.
  • Provide support to Reynolds EHS peers at other sites with EHS initiatives and projects.
  • Manage review and approval of new chemicals and ensuring they are entered into the company Safety Data Sheet (SDS) system.
  • Develop periodic safety communications for the site (e.g., safety committee materials, newsletters).
  • Provide oversight for the company’s  emergency response team activities including ensuring they have adequate training, equipment and supplies.
  • Ensure non-hazardous waste is properly profiled, labeled, shipped and disposed.
  • Provide direct support for hazardous materials shipments in compliance with US DOT and IATA requirements.
  • Ensure all  regulatory recordkeeping and reporting in maintained and submitted in a timely manner.
  • Perform duties of the Company’s Radiation Safety Officer to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations.
  • Provide guidance and insight regarding the company’s Chemical Hygiene Plan


Education & Experience:

  • A Bachelor of Science in engineering, relevant sciences or specific environmental, health and safety discipline.

  • 5+ years of relevant environmental, health and safety experience with at least 2 years directly supporting manufacturing.
  • Computer skills, specifically the ability to use Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, SAP and ability to learn to use proprietary databases and other computer-based applications. Advanced Excel skills preferred.
  • Ability to set priorities, achieve deadlines, and manage multiple tasks.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communications and presentation skills.
  • Comfortable and competent at interfacing with governmental agencies.
  • Able to read and grasp regulations, technical documents and mathematical calculations.
  • Must be able to work within a dynamic environment and shift priorities as various business needs arise without compromising compliance.
