What are the key objectives and expectations from this role?  

To apply knowledge of Product Compliance processes, chemicals and materials including purposes & functions and chemicals legislation to manage the compliance workload, driving process improvement activities in the Product Compliance team, and embedding best practices into business as usual.

To support business of tobacco alternative products (e-liquids and oral pouches) by creating and managing Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for BAT’s growing portfolio of Nicotine and Beyond products

Ensure Safety Data Sheets compliance with relevant regulations for all stages of product lifecycle.

To drive process improvement activities in the Product Compliance team and embedding best practices into business as usual.

What is the direct impact of this role on the team or organization?

The drivers of growth, value and competitive advantage in the tobacco industry are changing due to increased regulation. The major challenge for BAT will be the ability to offer a portfolio of differentiated product experiences through innovations that enable BAT to compete successfully under any future market scenario.

The Product Compliance Team specifically addresses this challenge by providing product regulatory impact assessments, regulatory interpretations, and validations, as part of the technical compliance evaluation package which is relied upon by BAT for successful innovations.

SDSs created by this role are the main tool for communication of hazard and precaution information throughout the supply chain. This information would be used for safe handling, transportation, use and storage of products by workers during those operations. SDS is also a critical part of ensuring legal compliance of our products and packaging labels, which is a critical requirement for shipments.

This role will have responsibility for the chemical and substance compliance content of the product portfolio which is relied upon by BAT compliance and product/project delivery teams and will be point of contact for the maintenance and update of Safety Data Sheets authoring platform.

Travel Required



  • Responsible for the management and delivery of chemical compliance and SDS management through the application of appropriate means learned from knowledge and experience and thorough understanding of materials and consumables, ensuring that the assessments conducted meet BAT Product Guidance, BAT Duty of Care standards and legal requirements.
  • Collect or coordinate collection of appropriate data for creating/revising SDSs, from various sources such as development team, supplier Safety Data Sheets and internal ingredient/formulation databases
  • Planning and execution short to medium term workload by authoring or coordinating SDS authoring activities within Chemical Compliance team to meet timelines.
  • Review the created SDSs, generate CLP/ GHS classification codes, ingredients list and sensitizers list for Labelling artwork and distribute or coordinate distribution of SDS to users, including tracking of all Safety Data Sheet requested and issued to End Market, Manufacturers, Develop, Deploy, supply chain and/or 3rd party companies.
  • Understands and applies their responsibilities under the EH&S policy.
  • Provide technical support to the Product Compliance team, in providing subject matter expertise to the Product Centres, Consumer Product Safety and PRRP teams on all chemical and SDS related matters and trains individuals on assessments processes, SOPs and WIDs.
  • Ensures the confidentiality of all supplier information is maintained to ensure their trust, support and co-operation.

  • Do you have experience in SDS creation and revision and of regional requirement variations with GHS style regulations?
  • Are you familiar with the roles of chemical compliance in defining hazards of chemicals and hazards symbols on packaging labels of products?
  • Are you familiar with what are other companies doing to ensure chemical safety for their products and consumables under the EU, Canada, South Korea or any other country/region specific regulations?


Experience Required

  • A good first degree in a relevant chemical technical discipline (MSc preferred) and/or area of expertise developed through experience and positive track record.
  • Working knowledge of global chemical regulatory requirements, and the Global Harmonised System (GHS) framework for chemicals.
  • Previous experience and good understanding in creating SDSs. Experience on SDS creation software (VERISK 3E platform knowledge would be an advantage)
  • Good IT skills including MS office proficiency
  • Good verbal and writing capabilities in English. Experience in technical report writing desirable
  • Good analytical skills and data-affinity desirable
  • Self-starter with ability to work unsupervised and under pressure whilst maintaining flexibility
  • Good attention to detail

  • Ability to manage upwards effectively and assertively, as well as within the peer group, to acquire the necessary information, and help drive and inform the decision-making process by the appropriately placed people (both at the senior and junior level).
  • Maintains awareness of the current & emerging chemical regulatory environment.
  • Able to deal proactively and confidently when faced with a high level of ambiguity and tight time constraints.
  • Excellent technical written and verbal reasoning skills.

Education / Qualifications / Certifications Required

  • University education level - Scientific/Technical Management
  • Chemistry with Management BSc (Hons); Chemical Engineering and Management BEng (Hons); Engineering Business Management BEng; etc


  • Demonstrable experience of regulated chemical or product compliance.
  • Professional membership of a chemical or Environmental, Health & Safety relevant institution.
  • Possess computer proficiency in Microsoft office software, data collection and general analysis tools; Microsoft Excel proficiency particularly beneficial. Experience in using document management platforms.
