FUNCTION: Marketing R&D (Research & Development)

SALARY RANGE: 64,880-81,100 GBP/year + excellent benefits + market leading bonus

What are the key objectives and expectations from this role?  

With an innovative approach, lead both exploratory and NPI (New Product Innovation) led development projects as required to deliver the 5-year innovation pipeline within the fast-moving pace of the Tobacco Heating Product (THP) portfolio.

The Senior Product Developer will act as the technical lead Product Developer to steer the execution of projects designed to develop product and technology specs in THP through guiding internal and external capabilities. The overarching objective of this role is to lead the development of superior products and contribute to the broader R&D 5-year innovation pipeline, ensuring that product development leads to manufacturing scale up and product deploy launch.

Through the application of sound technical and scientific principals this role ensures that products are delivered in line with standard methodologies for new product development and are supported by robust science.

What is the direct impact of this role on the team or organization?

This role has ownership of the product development project execution and authority over one or more product platforms, coordinating and upskilling the team of product developers performing the workstreams within the project, and collaborating closely with senior partners to mobilise the appropriate internal/external capabilities and funding.

  • Acting as the technical lead in steering exploratory product development projects, coordinating project workstreams and the internal development capabilities to deliver the 5-year innovation pipeline
  • Partnering internally and externally to support in building capabilities and know how to deliver innovative substrates and products that meet consumer/market requirements
  • Collaborating closely, managing, and influencing internal partners in order to acquire the appropriate resource capabilities, such as headcount or funding, necessary for implementing the product development programmes
  • Having ownership of a full Project, leading the execution of the pipeline and ensuring developing technologies can be scaled up and have marketability
  • Ensuring that all novel developed products are protected by secure IP, partnering with the LEX (Legal and External Affairs) department for patent work, and that any new technology or process is adequately protected in line with the wider IP Strategy
  • Integrating novel materials and processes in the THP space to ensure novel requirements are identified and integrated into the development protocol and translated to Product functionality
  • Collaborating with multiple internal departments, such as Operations and Manufacturing teams, for feedback on product scalability
  • Demonstrating technical expertise in THP to upskill internal capabilities in these spaces, building talent and technical depth and breadth within the science teams
  • Designing and driving Consumer research and sensory evaluations according to Project needs, in partnership with corresponding functions.


  • Do you have R&D experience with a further background in product development?

  • Strong managerial/leadership skills, with a confirmed ability to lead, coach & motivate team members, monitoring performance and ensuring high quality outputs
  • Able to influence and coordinate cross-functional teams, including internal and key external partnerships, critical in the delivery of programmes and initiatives to ensure the most effective use of internal/external resource/expertise
  • Decoding of Consumer Research results into actionable activities to improve products based on consumer’s feedback
  • Understanding of science plan timescales and product launch sensitivities
  • Understanding of capability utilization within a project
  • Knowledge of inhalation products commercials
  • Able to think fast and in new ways to resolve emerging challenges and develop alternate ways of working
  • Open minded to rapidly changing priorities and challenges, able to think clearly under pressure and seek new solutions and ways of working
  • Degree or equivalent in a science or related field of study.
