FUNCTION: Scientific Research & Development (R&D)

LOCATION: Southampton

What are the key objectives and expectations from this role?

This role will proactively drive the planning, preparation and approval of high-quality scientific reports and summaries to support all regulatory filings for BAT’s reduced risk nicotine products. The incumbent will be required to maintain a strong working knowledge of BAT’s reduced risk nicotine products and collaborate with Scientific Leads of Clinical, Preclinical, Consumer Behaviour, Data Sciences and the Science Portfolio Manager. The Senior Scientific Writer will also be required to work closely with other functions including Legal & External Affairs, Scientific & Regulatory Affairs, Business Communications & Sustainability, Consumer Product Safety, and Product Compliance.

The individual must both be able to work independently and as an effective and engaged team member. Strong initiative and follow through are also essential for this position.

Geographic Scope: Global


  • Leading the critical analysis of scientific information through diligent engagement with Scientific Leads (Clinical, Preclinical, Consumer Behaviour and Data Sciences), ensuring consistency of facts and style within and across documents to ensure a cohesive scientific narrative for BAT’s regulatory dossiers
  • Owning the creation of regulatory dossiers for BAT’s reduced risk nicotine products through the planning, preparation and approval of high-quality scientific publications, reports, and summaries
  • Ensuring alignment with other functions (Legal & External Affairs, Scientific & Regulatory Affairs, Business Communications & Sustainability, etc.) to eliminate gaps and leverage potential synergies
  • Presenting progress and developments at relevant Scientific Research and Development forums and committees
  • Maintaining scientific knowledge of BAT’s reduced risk nicotine products and those of its competitors
  • Supporting and aligning preparations with the Dossier Submissions Programme Manager and Scientific Leads for review at the relevant regulatory bodies.


  • Has relevant experience in chemical, biochemical, biological, clinical, consumer behaviour, or equivalent scientific writing and a history of prior meaningful participation in regulatory submissions or publications in high-impact scientific journals
  • Exceptional technical writing capability and an ability to convey and summarize complex technical data and analyses in a clear and concise manner
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to develop important relationships with key stakeholders and to work both independently and collaboratively with a team in a geographically dispersed environment
  • Must thrive working in a fast-paced, innovative environment while remaining flexible proactive, resourceful, and efficient
  • Strong project management skills in guiding and working with cross-functional representatives through the composing or updating technical documents in a timely and high-quality manner
  • Experience in successfully resolving conflicting editorial opinions expressed by team members
  • Demonstrable experience of strategy development and execution
  • Excellent technical and scientific leadership
  • Proven interpersonal and communication skills, coupled with the ability to manage multiple interfaces and stakeholders
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • High attention to detail
  • BSc/PhD required in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, Cell biology or equivalent.


  • Working knowledge of regulatory requirements is desired
  • Good awareness reduced risk nicotine products and competitive environment/market
  • Proven ability to work independently and effectively on multiple programs in a dynamic matrixed environment.
