What are the key objectives and expectations from this role?
The Senior Technologist – Analytical is responsible for supporting the planning, execution, and reporting of analytical studies using laboratory equipment to address scientific questions and inform business decision-making. This role involves operating and maintaining analytical instruments, ensuring compliance with laboratory standards, collaborating with cross-functional teams, and clearly communicating findings to guide strategic direction.
What is the direct impact of this role on the team or organization?
This role plays a critical part in supporting the development of Modern Oral and Wellness & Stimulation product categories by delivering accurate and reliable analytical data that informs key business decisions.
Your key responsibilities will include:
- Collaborate with the line manager and team members of Analytical Development department to design and execute analytical studies to address scientific questions and to draft technical reports.
- Identify trends or issues in test results that could impact timelines, safety, or performance.
- Generate reliable analytical data that supports product development and/or product quality/safety decisions.
- Operate and maintain key analytical instruments, including LC-MS/MS, LC-UV, GC-MS, and GC-FID.
- Apply best practices and comply with laboratory standards using technical knowledge and scientific principles.
- Develop and maintain knowledge of testing methodologies to effectively carry out assigned tasks.
- Maintain confidentiality of all technical data to protect BAT’s intellectual property.
- Promote and support collaborative ways of working within the Analytical Development team.
What are we looking for?
Experience Required
- Practical expertise in analytical techniques (e.g., GC-FID, GC-MS, HPLC, HPLC/MS/MS, aerosol sampling)
- Ability to deliver multiple tasks within defined timescales working individually and as part of a team
- Broad knowledge of BAT products, testing approaches and data interpretation
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Proficiency in MS Excel, PowerPoint and other business applications
- Ability to work unsupervised and to collaborate within a team
Technical / Functional / Leadership Skills Required
- Good interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written)
- Ability to collaborate within a team and with internal/external business partners
- Strong planning and task prioritization skills with focus on business needs.
- Analytical method development and optimization
Education / Qualifications / Certifications Required
- A degree in Chemistry, Analytical Science, or a related field (BSc/MSc or equivalent).
- Associate or higher membership of an appropriate professional body (e.g. Royal Society of Chemistry)
