The overall purpose of the role is to manage BAT’s group companies and above market entities in both an advisory and compliance capacity; to lead and develop the provision of VAT support services to End Markets globally, and to the GBS teams; to manage the intrinsic VAT risk and ensure that appropriate governance is in place; and to lead and develop VAT technological solutions and shared service capabilities at a global level
Your key responsibilities will include:
- Represent the VAT field in Tax Committees and other team member forums
- Assess, develop, and implement, innovative VAT technology solutions in alignment with strategy to increase efficiency and accuracy of compliance and ensure that BAT is prepared for new official electronic reporting requirements across the BAT network
- Ensure accurate management of VAT master data and configuration on SAP in support of the GPOs
- Ensure that VAT process maps are maintained, and accurate processes applied, for the Top 30 VAT payer end markets
- Make sure that the VAT control framework is followed throughout the BAT network, including in relation to the Tax Management Guidelines, Control Navigator and VAT SOx controls and that the VAT control framework adapts to changing legal environments
- Supervise and control VAT payments by GBS to ensure that these are made on time and in full
- Settle that VAT compliance resources are available and adequately provided to manage VAT reporting and compliance liabilities in BAT companies
- Review and provide final approver level approval of UK VAT returns and VAT returns submitted in other countries for above market companies
- Manage VAT audits and official reviews and enquiries relating to operations of BAT companies and provide control, advice and guidance to End Markets in relation to VAT audits
- Provide advice to End Markets on VAT matters, including VAT approval of new contracts and trading models, and the impact of legal changes
- Offer instruction to End Markets on other indirect tax matters (duties and environmental taxes) where required
- Act as line manager for (currently) six FTEs composing the Central and GBS VAT compliance teams
- Manage training and learning requirements and the development of supporting materials
- Provide VAT input to management teams and offer support to the finance teams concerning the financial aspects of VAT including cost and cash management
What are we looking for?
- Professional accountancy qualification or proven experience (eg VAT specialist in a tax authority)
- An understanding and experience of finance management and accounting in large businesses
- Knowledge of relevant finance tools and systems including SAP, and the different VAT compliance packages available on the market
- Knowledge of sources of VAT law and the different types of VAT systems applied around the world
- Continuous improvement and challenging the status quo
- Ability to work under pressure and keep to tight deadlines
