British American Tobacco (BAT) has an exciting opportunity for an Electrical Technician in Fiji.
The Electrical technician will be responsible for ensuring all electrical components in machinery at PMD and SMD are maintained ensuring the safe and efficient production and adhering to quality and safety standards. This role is accountable for maintaining continuous improvement in production processes and rigorous utilization of IWS from electrical perspective. This role is key in providing process and/or technical expertise within day-to-day operations. The role is accountable to all production Matrix. 95% of individual’s time will be spent on the operating Floor working with the team
Your key responsibilities will include:
Business Accountabilities
- Consistently follow all electrical safety procedures, including LOTOTO, risk assessments, and compliance with regulatory standards.
- Proactively identify, report, and eliminate hazards, unsafe behaviors, or near-misses to maintain a safe working environment.
- Maintain a clean, organized and safe electrical work areas, ensuring panels, tools, and equipment are kept in audit-ready condition.
- Ensure all electrical work is completed to a high technical standard, following GMP, EHS standards and policies, and regulatory requirements for electrical safety.
- Identify and escalate any equipment or process issues that may impact safety and product quality, ensuring reliable and consistent manufacturing performance.
- Respond quickly to breakdowns and use structured fault‑finding methods to diagnose electrical and control system issues accurately.
- Work collaboratively with Mechanical Technicians and Operators to restore equipment safely and minimize downtime.
- Document faults, corrective actions, and recommendations to prevent recurrence and support long-term equipment reliability.
- Identify opportunities to maintain, optimize, or upgrade equipment to improve reliability, safety, and performance.
- Lead or support improvement projects, including automation upgrades, equipment modifications, and efficiency‑enhancing initiatives.
- Contribute technical insights to root‑cause analysis and share learnings to strengthen team capability and prevent recurring losses.
- Provide day‑to‑day technical support to operators and production teams during start‑ups, changeovers, and troubleshooting activities.
- Share technical knowledge and train operators on basic equipment care to strengthen overall line capability and reduce avoidable losses.
- Coaching and role modelling IWS behaviors on production floor
- Targeting for zero electrical breakdowns, 0 safety incidents and zero impact on products
- Develop, implement and sustain a proper electrical maintenance plan across all production machines to ensure the integrity and runnability of machines. This includes but not limited to electrical CIL, CL, MPS and preventative maintenance plans
Loss Elimination
- Support in the execution of PM Pillar Tools
- Support the 90-Day Plans to address losses and build capability across electrical team
- Drive breakthrough results in OEE targeting Unplanned Downtime (no downtime due to electrical failures)
- Delivering new ways of working to reduce Planned downtime with operational teams
- Lead issue resolution “to Root Cause” on the floor of chronic stops
- Coach necessity & use of Unified Problem Solving, including 6W2H & speed of execution
- Accountability for ensuring all Machines can operate electrically safe and all with no Speed loss and to the BAT Quality Guidelines
- Ensuring that correct standards and SOP are cascaded and followed across line to ensure electrical components at baseline
- Proper maintenance plans in place to ensure machine is maintained at base condition and reduction in process failure or breakdowns
- Ensuring correct and timely parts ordering to eliminate losses
*Above will need to be maintained and followed across factory and support utilities as and when required for electrical services
DMS (Daily Management Setting):
- Actively support AM and PM Pillar
- Support in all DMSs on SMD production floor: CL/CIL/BDE/IE/DH/RCO/CM/MP&S
- On the floor coaching of equipment owners
- Perform hands-on coaching
- Loss Elimination
- Skill Development/Technical Mastery
- Participate in Shift DDS, Line DDS, Weekly and Monthly DDS to enable clear improvement plans
People
- Manage good working relationship with the key stakeholders (production team, line, engineering, maintenance & process lead)
- Ensure proper networking with Engineering counterparts across BAT factories
- Maintain good relations with key suppliers
- Create conducive environment that will motivate the team (maintenance team, module leads and operators) to strive for achieving continuous improvement
- Work collaboratively with cross‑functional teams, contractors, and equipment vendors to resolve technical issues and support continuous improvement.
Other Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
- Diploma in Electrical Engineering discipline with at least 5 years of FMCG experience.
- Knowledge in Lean Manufacturing, 6 sigma or similar methodologies
- Proven ability to drive cultural change
- Proficient in MS Words and power-point is required for OPL & Work Instructions
- Adequate knowledge on problem solving skills (5Whys, 6W2H) and general factory standard such as 5S, EHS & Good manufacturing practices.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills with all levels of staff
- Proven ability in driving a diverse work environment ensuring employees are engaged and empowered in contributing to the success of our operation and business.
- A strong customer focused mind set and a strong capability to build relationships in the workplace
- Team player him/herself
- Good time management and able to deliver results under stress
- Proficient in troubleshooting knowledge on machines (cigarette maker/packer) will be added advantage.
- Wiremans license
Delivering results for Business Unit
- Understand, follow, and ensure compliance with QA and HS&E Key Elements.
- Eliminate Root Cause of any abnormalities
- Drive breakthrough results in Process Reliability, Planned and Unplanned Downtime while delivering against the Master Production Schedule
- Lead issue resolution “to Root Cause” on the floor of chronic stops
