British American Tobacco UK has an exciting opportunity for a Chemometrics Specialist in Southampton

The role is responsible for supporting the Applied Chemometrics CoE Laboratory in accordance with Business demands.

  • As a Chemometrics Specialist, you will be responsible by managing the chemometrics operation and methodologies.
  • Driving Applied Chemometrics Lab capabilities and apply chemometrics tools in connection with business needs.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Implement Applied Chemometrics capabilities and methodologies to support projects with chemical and sensory-like within the appropriate lead-times and costs as defined.
  • Responsible to handle the analytical chemistry data generation and operation ensuring chemical data quality and method alignment as well as management of demands for the laboratory.
  • Provide advisory in chemistry, analytical chemistry and chemometrics to improve the quality and reliability of analyses, ensuring robust results.
  • Monitor projects implementation and coordinate laboratory activities execution ensuring chemometrics tools capacity.
  • Support the development of new capabilities and new chemical methods development associated with chemometrics demand, internally or through main internal and external partners.
  • Assist the application of chemometrics capabilities and methodologies to cross-category product development.

What are we looking for?

Technical Experience Required

  • Proven experience with chemometrics (unsupervised and supervised methods) and analytical chemistry statistics (ANOVA, comparison tests), as well as programming skills for data science (like Python, Matlab, R).
  • Relevant experience in analytical chemistry ideally with experience in data treatment of chromatographic (LC, GC), spectrometric (MS) and spectroscopic (NIR, FTIR, HSI) techniques.
  • Solid experience working in Chemistry and Analytical Laboratories.

Functional / Leadership Skills Required

  • Proactive and curious mentality to build upon current approaches, taking scientific findings into account and understanding potential impacts for the business.
  • Apply appropriate solutions or approaches to identify and resolve problems based on an understanding and experience and proactively develop new working procedures or methods as needed to solve technical challenges.
  • Excellent analytics and problem-solving skills and attention to detail, with the ability to translate business requirements into technical solutions.
  • Ability to effectively communicate complex technical concepts and findings to non-technical partners, as well as collaborate with cross-functional teams.

Education / Qualifications / Certifications Required

  • Degree, master’s degree, PhD or equivalent in Chemistry or Pharmaceutical Sciences or Chemical Engineering or Biochemistry or similar discipline.
