For some roles, you'll be invited to take part in our online asessments which are designed to remove biases and measure competencies, social and behavioural traits. The algorithms behind the scenes help us see if you have some of the core traits we look for across our organisation. The tests make use of AI and behavioural science to understand more about your skills and potential and help us create more diverse teams.
Our screening interviews are normally conducted over the phone or via Teams. They are an efficient way for you to share some key information with us and for the recruiter to answer any questions you may have on the company or the role.
Our face-to-face interviews can take either in person or virtually and help you get to know us and us get to know you. The interview covers a range of topics and often references our leadership capabilities – to see whether your needs are matched by our offering. It’s a two-way discussion and a great chance for you to meet our leaders and ask questions, making sure that we’re the right choice for you.

The recruiter will first review your application and conduct some CV screening. If your profile fits the role, you will be contacted and invited for a Recruiter interview. As the next step in the process, the recruiter will share a summary of your interview and profile with the hiring manager of the position.
The focus of a screening interview is often for the Recruiter to assess your overall fit for BAT and your qualifications for the role. Recruiters typically screen candidates based on their resumes, skills, and general suitability. A good starting point for preparing for screening interviews would be researching our careers site, bat.com page and social channels. You will find plenty of information on our purpose, values and culture.
Interviews with our hiring teams will delve deeper into your specific capabilities and how they align with the needs of the team and the role itself. Hiring teams are more likely to ask detailed questions about your experience, problem-solving skills, and how you would contribute to the team's objectives. It’s best to have some examples prepared to bring your experience to life.
Our Assessment Centers are structured to evaluate skills, competencies and the potential of candidates. These can be virtual or in-person, and consist of three main activities, a group exercise and two individual activities. During these sessions you will have the chance to interact with current BAT employees, and we anticipate that you will find these sessions highly engaging.
There is nothing technical to prepare, we just ask you to be yourself, have fun and enjoy the experience. It would be worthwhile researching our business through our websites and social channels and gaining a good understanding of our values and culture. We’ll also be talking through some of your experience so having some examples prepared can be a benefit.
Your best point of contact will your Recruiter who screened and scheduled your interview. They’ll be best placed to discuss feedback, timelines and answer any questions you may have. Depending on the hiring managers preference, you may find you are invited to additional interview stages which could take the form of additional competency based interview or include a task or presentation.
