British American Tobacco Italy has an exciting opportunity for a R&D Specialist in Trieste
This role applies technical expertise in oral product development to support BAT’s current and future oral portfolio. Under the guidance of senior team members, the role contributes to the concept creation, development, evaluation, and qualification of oral products aligned with the business strategy.
The R&D Specialist is responsible for delivering assigned development workstreams, applying laboratory and technical expertise to generate high quality product outputs and supporting both internal and external R&D collaborations. The role supports the development of innovative product solutions through formulation design, idea capture and intellectual property protection embedding cost, sustainability, manufacturability, product safety, and regulatory considerations throughout formulation development ahead of scale up.
The ideal candidate will possess a strong fundamental science background e.g. Chemistry/Pharma with pharmaceutical R&D experience and demonstrate the ability to work in a fast-paced team environment.
The role contributes to continuous improvement initiatives within the team by supporting agreed ways of working and participating in knowledge sharing and up skilling activities.
Your key responsibilities will include:
- Lead project development workstreams in accordance with regulatory requirements and R&D innovation processes as applicable
- Support and carry out laboratory testing activities, including experiment preparation and completion, equipment and workspace maintenance, and adherence to safety, quality and documentation requirements in line with EHS and GLP
- Support the generation and processing of scientific data for oral development across our formats
- Interpret analytical data to draw sound scientific conclusions and make evidence-based recommendations, with an understanding of data limitations
- Support technical activities for oral product scale-up
- Support the evaluation and application of emerging technologies and processes
- Support the development of external partner relationships and contribute to discussions on potential external partner opportunities
- Support continuous improvement initiatives by contributing ideas and feedback to improve procedures and ways of working within the team
- Ability to work cross-functionally, across global sites, and support project teams to facilitate project execution
What are we looking for?
- Degree-level qualification in a relevant field of study (Pharma, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or Materials Science)
- 2 – 4 years of industry experience within the pharmaceutical sector, with experience in oral products considered advantageous but not essential, and exposure to product development activities.
- Desirable experience with formulating or manufacturing of at least some of the following: excipient formulations, component solubilisation, component stabilisation, delivery strategies
- Ability to demonstrate laboratory and project management experience
- To have technical curiosity with problem solving skills
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to liaise with multiple departments and stakeholders
- Good verbal and written communication skills in English and Italian
- Demonstrate experience of laboratory practices and procedures
- Basic understanding of pharmaceutical regulatory and compliance requirements, with oral product specific knowledge considered an advantage
- Ability to plan and prioritise tasks based on business need
- Demonstrates a strong willingness to learn, upskill and contribute ideas
