ROLE SUMMARY

BAT is evolving at pace into a global multi-category business. To support this transformation, APMEA North Data & Analytics is looking for a BI & Analytics Engineering Lead who can run a complex, live BI portfolio today while preparing the organisation for more mature, self-service and AI-enabled analytics.

APMEA North D&A supports Japan, Korea and Taiwan in a fast-moving, regional and matrix environment. The team develops and operates business-critical analytics products used by commercial, marketing, category, consumer and leadership teams. These products are built primarily on Microsoft ecosystem and depend on close collaboration across business stakeholders, solution managers, data engineers, data scientists, platform teams, global product teams and external delivery partners.

This is not a pure reporting role. The successful candidate will lead the BI function, remain sufficiently hands-on to challenge technical solutions, and own the quality and sustainability of the data and reporting products delivered by the team. A significant part of the role sits behind the dashboard: tracing data through the end-to-end architecture, diagnosing issues, identifying root causes and coordinating durable fixes.

Geographic Scope: APMEA North (Japan, Korea and Taiwan) with regular regional and global collaboration

Your key responsibilities will include:

• Own and manage the end-to-end BI portfolio, including commercial, consumer, e-commerce, NPS, and leadership reporting products, ensuring alignment with business priorities and strategic objectives.
• Lead the complete BI product lifecycle from requirements gathering, feasibility assessment, data preparation, modelling, development, testing, deployment, adoption, support, and enhancement management while ensuring solutions remain sustainable, documented, and aligned with architecture standards and global templates.
• Prioritise BI demand based on business value, risk, effort, and strategic fit, balancing new development with the stability of existing products and promoting self-service reporting through governed data models and views.
• Act as the main point of contact for data and reporting issues, leading root cause analysis across source systems, integrations, transformations, semantic models, platforms, and reports while coordinating data engineers, platform teams, data scientists, and vendors to implement lasting solutions.
• Establish and maintain data quality governance. Define controls and validate critical business metrics. Monitor operational performance and manage incidents and blocking issues. Serve as the quality gate for BI and data engineering work.    
• Drive AI and data readiness initiatives by preparing data for governed enterprise platforms. Define semantic models, critical metric standards, business definitions, and governance frameworks. This supports accurate AI-assisted analytics and trusted business insights.  
• Lead, coach, and develop the BI team while managing internal resources, contractors, and vendors, fostering collaboration across BI, data engineering, data science, solution management, and platform teams, and strengthening capabilities in Power BI, Fabric, automation, data modelling, engineering practices, and AI-enabled analytics.
• Build and embed data governance checkpoints and operating models, continuously improve tools and methodologies, promote practical AI adoption through real business use cases, and effectively manage multiple high-priority projects and stringent timelines in a fast-paced business environment.

What are we looking for?

• 6+ years of experience in BI, analytics, or related fields, including experience leading, coaching, or mentoring team members.
• Strong hands-on expertise in Power BI, including Power Query, data modelling, DAX, semantic model design, performance optimisation, and deployment practices, supported by strong SQL skills and the ability to trace business metrics from dashboards through data platforms to source systems.
• Solid understanding of data structures, data transformation, ETL/ELT processes, architecture, system integration, and data quality controls, with a proven track record of delivering and supporting multiple BI products and resolving data issues through structured root-cause analysis.
• Experience coordinating with data engineers, data scientists, platform teams, and external partners, while maintaining quality standards and effectively working within agile delivery environments with competing priorities.
• Strong collaborator management, communication, and influencing skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly, challenge low-value requests constructively, and support informed decision-making.  
• Demonstrated interest in AI-assisted analytics, including hands-on experience with AI-enabled tools, a clear understanding of their limitations, and recognition that AI outcomes depend on high-quality data and well-defined semantic models.
• Strong analytical thinking and attention to detail are required. A continuous-improvement approach and excellent written and verbal English communication skills are essential. A degree or equivalent experience in a relevant field is needed.  
• Additional advantages include experience with Microsoft Fabric (warehouses, lakehouses, pipelines, notebooks, and semantic models), Power Automate, Power Apps, SharePoint, Excel automation, Copilot for Power BI, AI-ready semantic model preparation, Microsoft certifications (PL-300/DP-600), retail or consumer data domains, regional/shared services environments, and working knowledge of Python, R, or similar programming languages
