ROLE POSITIONING AND OBJECTIVES

What are the key objectives and expectations from this role? 

The Scientific Engagement Manager (SEM) support the Senior Scientific Engagement Manager (SSEM) to co-lead and coordinate all scientific engagement activities within the AME region to drive consistent Tobacco Harm Reduction literacy and acceptance. This individual will support the development of a proactive, regional outreach strategy and engagement plan that rapidly expands science-focused Key Opinion Leader (KOL) networks, including private and public research agencies, academic groups and institutions in priority markets and improving the networking among them (including the management of relevant regional fora). The primary function of this network will be to support appropriate engagement with regulators on tobacco harm reduction; development of appropriate evidence-based public policy; and scientific/technical matters relating to regulation. The SEM will provide mentorship and support to AME end markets in development of local scientific initiatives and KOL engagement plans, including triaging activity to Global CORA. This role also represents BAT as a scientific peer to the external scientific community and activities.

What is the direct impact of this role on the team or organisation?

The regulatory environment of tobacco and nicotine is changing rapidly and influencing attitudes and behaviours towards the use of RRPs. In this evolving external environment, BAT’s is striving to ensure a coordinated approach to scientific regulation management.

BAT therefore has an internal regional capability to drive effective scientific engagement to support its business objectives and ensure that the group can craft the external environment for us to compete, grow, and accelerate the transition to a smokeless world.

Reports to: Senior Scientific Engagement Manager- AME

Geographic Scope: America

WHAT YOU WILL BE ACCOUNTABLE FOR

  • Providing expert input to define and deliver the AME scientific regulation strategy.
  • Supporting the development of scientific counselling and inputs to engage with political and regulatory bodies on BAT and third-party science to deliver evidence-based regulation for all AMERICA markets.
  • Ensuring THR adoption efforts drive consistent Tobacco Harm Reduction literacy and acceptance.
  • Guiding and supporting AME end markets in development of local scientific initiatives.
  • Expanding science-focused KOL networks, including private and public research agencies, academic groups and institutions in priority markets and improving the networking among them (including the management of relevant regional fora). The primary function of this network will be to support appropriate engagement with regulators on: tobacco harm reduction, development of appropriate evidence-based public policy; and scientific/technical matters relating to regulation;
  • Assisting in the localization of scientific advocacy in layperson terms for political and third-party partners, taking into consideration regional sensibilities and cultural aspects.
  • Ensuring that adequate technical engagement assistance on product standards development to end markets and directly to national standards authorities is provided.
  • Working with the BC&S team to disseminate BAT Science in the region and acting as a spokesperson, where appropriate.; and
  • Upskilling end-markets on scientific literacy and identifying scientific fora and opportunities to leverage BAT Science and other research within end markets so that it can be integrated into their campaign and regulatory engagement plans.

ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE, SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

Experience Required

  • Proven expertise engaging with and mobilizing scientific KOLs and interest groups.
  • Sound knowledge of tobacco, food, or pharmaceutical science complexities including chemistry, toxicology, pre-clinical, clinical, and behavioral science.
  • Experience in FMCGs managing sophisticated market-facing and regulatory dependent projects.
  • Understands World Health Organization´s political environment and public policy-making processes.
  • Experience of crafting and managing 3rd party networks.

Technical / Functional / Leadership Skills Required

  • Proven track record to engage external and internal partners in an empathetic manner.
  • Project management skills;
  • Excellent communications skills;

Education / Qualifications / Certifications Required

  • Educated to degree level; PhD, PharmD, or MD preferred.
  • Advance English.
