British American Tobacco UK has an exciting opportunity for an ANALYTICAL SCIENTIST – MATERNITY COVER in Southampton
What are the key objectives and expectations from this role?
The role will contribute to the analytical testing of new products by developing and validating advanced analytical methods to support BAT’s current and future product portfolio, with an emphasis on ‘beyond tobacco’ innovations. The position will also focus on improving GC×GC data processing workflows and enhancing GC non-targeted screening methodologies.
What is the direct impact of this role on the team or organization?
The role will assist in the assessment of BAT products and technologies, delivering innovations to market.
Your key responsibilities will include:
- Support analytical testing and the development of novel analytical approaches as part of an internal project team
- Provide expert input on analytical science and evaluation of resulting scientific data
- Drafting Study Plans, Standard Operating Procedures, and Reports
- Lead interactions with peers in the identification of analytical requirements at project level
- Keep stakeholders informed of progress through formal and informal communication
- Promote and apply compliance with quality systems and requirements to ensure robust analytical processes
- Select appropriate means to address new analytical challenges

What are we looking for?
Experience Required
- Relevant technical experience and knowledge of analytical method development and validation using complex instrumental analysis techniques (NIR, FTIR, GC-MS, GC-MS/MS, GC×GC-TOFMS, LC-MS/MS)
- Expertise in GC×GC data processing and non-targeted GC screening
- Skilled use and understanding of instrumental techniques applicable to the isolation and measurement of trace level analytes in complex matrices
- Good analytical knowledge for the detection and quantification of a range of active substances found in consumer products
Technical / Functional / Leadership Skills Required
- Experience of working in an ISO accredited and/or GxP compliant laboratory
- Ability to influence and communicate across the team and within the R&D
- Good attention to detail with a keen problem-solving attitude
- Creative, flexible, receptive to change, focused and able to deliver
Education / Qualifications / Certifications Required
- Professional/academic achievement in Chemistry or a related physical science up to 1st degree level or equivalent
- Active membership of the RSC and/or evidence of pro-active continuing professional development
BENEFICIAL
- Competency in the chemical analysis of natural extracts and related products
- Familiarity with software such as SCIEX OS, Analyst, ChromSpace, ChromCompare+
- Experience with Phyton data analysis, programming, and modelling
