As Senior Counsel – Regulatory, you will work within a collaborative legal team to counsel internal clients on strategic direction and operational advice regarding regulatory, legislative, and reputational matters relevant to the tobacco industry. Primary job responsibilities include clear legal and business-focused guidance to cross-functional teams including senior level executives on a variety of complex regulatory matters, proposed legislation, corporate communications, tobacco-related laws and Food and Drug Administration regulations. The role requires a candidate with exceptional analytical, advisory, and communication skills who can provide clear legal guidance to internal clients and cross-functional teams (including senior-level executives) on a variety of complex regulatory matters.
Your key responsibilities will include:
- Providing timely and effective legal advice to relevant stakeholders on proposed and existing policy, practices, and specific legal matters on various topics
- Advising Scientific & Regulatory Affairs and Research & Development functions as needed in connection with product submissions, product integrity, clinical studies, and ongoing compliance with applicable state and federal regulatory requirements
- Reviewing formal and informal regulatory proposals advanced at the state and federal levels
- Drafting submissions to governmental agencies in response to formal regulatory proposals and participate in meetings with representatives of such agencies
- Collaborating to ensure external engagement and business communications strategies are in line with the regional (USA) strategy
- Serving as legal representative in regular cross-functional meetings to provide advice and guidance regarding legal and regulatory compliance.
- Regularly engaging and collaborating with global legal, regulatory, business communications, and marketing colleagues and other end-markets on potential marketing initiatives and advise on U.S.-specific laws and regulations.
- Directing and managing work of external counsel, as needed
What are we looking for?
- Bachelor’s Degree and Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school. This person must also be a member in good standing of a State Bar within the US
- 5+ years of legal experience, preferably within a large law firm, a corporate legal department, a federal or state government body, or related area
- Solid legal and business judgment
- Strong organizational and oral and written communication, negotiation, time-management, and problem-solving skills
- Demonstrated ability to grasp and analyze complex issues and communicate legal advice to a variety of stakeholders
- Strong strategic, leadership, and influencing skills, with the ability to interact effectively with business personnel
- Flexibility and willingness to manage conflicting demands and adapt to new challenges and a fast-moving environment
- Excellent organizational skills with ability to oversee complex projects in an efficient and effective manner
- Experience in tobacco law is not required, but desirable
