British American Tobacco Italy has a great opportunity for a Packaging Developer II – NRT in Trieste.
Annual Gross Salary Pay Range: 56.300 € – 70,434 € B2-A2 Chemical Pharmaceutical CLA level
This role is responsible for leading the end-to-end development and lifecycle management of pharmaceutical packaging systems, ensuring alignment with regulatory requirements, product quality, and patient safety.
You will work across the full drug product lifecycle, from early development and clinical supply through to commercial manufacturing and technology transfer, ensuring packaging solutions meet regulatory, quality, and patient requirements.
This role requires strong collaboration with Quality, Regulatory Affairs, Manufacturing, Device/Drug Product teams, and external suppliers to ensure compliant, robust, and scalable packaging solutions.
This role is suited to a professional with 3–5 years of experience looking to deepen technical expertise and take ownership of defined projects or workstreams within a global environment.
Your key responsibilities will include:
- Lead and deliver end-to-end development of pharmaceutical packaging systems, progressing concepts through validation and commercialisation to ensure robust and compliant product launches.
- Define and implement packaging specifications, technical requirements, and acceptance criteria for packaging components, ensuring alignment with regulatory requirements, product performance, and quality standards.
- Develop and implemate packaging validation activities, including DQ/IQ/OQ/PQ, stability and compatibility testing, and material qualification trials to support manufacturing readiness and regulatory requirements.
- Lead the development of injection moulded packaging solutions, from concept evaluation through commercialisation, ensuring robust and scalable packaging designs.
- Plan, implement, and support pilot trials, first production runs, scale-up activities, technology transfer, and industrialisation projects in collaboration with manufacturing sites and suppliers.
- Resolve complex packaging and manufacturing issues through root cause analysis and implementation of effective corrective actions to improve packaging performance and reliability.
- Author, review, and handle GMP documentation, including protocols, reports, validation documentation, and specifications, ensuring compliance and audit readiness.
- Act as Packaging Subject Matter Expert (SME), within cross-functional, collaborated with suppliers, CMOs, to deliver successful scale-up, technology transfer, and industrialisation, ensuring packaging robustness in production environments, driving decision-making, innovation, cost optimisation, and sustainability initiatives;
- Travel to suppliers/plants to support development/fine-tuning and or specification release
What are we looking for?
- 3–5+ years of experience in pharmaceutical packaging development, including complex injection moulded packaging (plastic and metal) and flexible plastic packaging.
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in: Packaging Engineering or Mechanical / Materials Engineering or Pharmaceutical Sciences
- Project Management certificate
- Knowledge of GMP, FDA, and ISO requirements applicable to pharmaceutical packaging development.
- Experience with: Stability and compatibility testing, Packaging validation (Design Qualification/Installation Qualification/Operational Qualification/Performance Qualification) and documentation systems
- Knowledge of common plastic materials, especially polyolefins, and awareness of global sustainability developments in plastics.
- Working knowledge of developing and validating Child Resistant/Senior Effective packaging solutions.
- Experience using SolidWorks, AutoCAD, MoldFlow (FEMS) and other packaging-related software tools.
- Strong engineering analysis skills including tolerance analysis, DFA, DFM, DFMEA, packaging design, modelling, validation, and rapid prototyping techniques.
- Ability to work effectively within global cross-functional teams, supported by strong communication, collaboration, planning, implementation, resilience, adaptability, and customer management skills.
