British American Tobacco Cameroon has an exciting opportunity for an Assistant Manager Corporate Tax, WESA in Douala.
FUNCTION: Finance
SUB FUNCTION: Tax
GEOGRAPHICAL SCOPE: BAT markets in Cameroun, Gabon and Ghana + Exit Markets listed below.
REPORTS TO: Senior Manager Corporate Tax, Nigeria & WESA
The role’s responsibilities currently cover British American Tobacco (“BAT”)’s operations in Cameroun, Gabon and Ghana, collectively referred to as part of the West, East and South African Markets (“WESA”), as well as Mali, Ivory Coast, Democratic Republic of Congo, collectively referred to as the “Exit Markets”. Any changes to relevant markets will be communicated by the role’s Line Manager.
Your key responsibilities will include:
The level of involvement required for different markets will differ depending on business and tax team requirements. In certain markets, the tax team will be fully responsible for all aspects of tax compliance and reporting, while in other markets the end market finance team or external tax consultants will assume this responsibility with support from the Assistant Manager Corporate Tax, WESA.
Coordinate and manage tax compliance and reporting activities of the BAT entities as assigned
- Manage the accurate and timely calculation, filing and payment of relevant tax liabilities for the WESA and Exit BAT entities.
- Review tax returns and schedules for submission to the revenue authorities as prepared by tax/finance analysts or advisors.
- Coordinate and supervise tax compliance activities for the assigned markets.
- Preparation of tax computations (including deferred tax computations and effective tax rate reconciliations) in the general ledger, and disclosure notes in the annual financial statements in the assigned markets, in line with Group reporting requirements.
- Preparation of tax forecasts, or validation of tax forecasts prepared by end market finance teams, as required.
- Completion of BAT Group reporting templates and schedules.
Manage transfer pricing compliance in line with Group guidelines and applicable laws
Transfer pricing documentation preparation is managed by the Group’s Transfer Pricing Centre of Excellence. This role will be expected to:
- Review and update transfer pricing documentation in line with Group guidelines and relevant local & international laws.
- Validate accuracy and completeness of data fed into transfer pricing documentation and returns.
- Ensure supporting documentation to support the arm’s length nature of affected transactions is accurately and adequately maintained.
Business support
- Assess tax implications of business projects and initiatives, agreements, and transactions in the assigned markets.
- Ensure appropriate and robust processes and controls are in place to handle corporate tax governance in the assigned markets, following agreed Global standard processes and frameworks.
- Assist the Senior Manager Corporate Tax, NG & WESA with monitoring of tax risks across the relevant WESA and Exit markets; Ensure all tax risks and sensitivities are fully investigated and correctly reflected in the assigned market’s financial statements.
- Stay abreast of new tax legislation and assess business impact of the same on the assigned markets.
- Support the Senior Manager Corporate Tax, NG & WESA in preparation for and facilitation of regular tax technical meetings and tax committee meetings.
Tax audit/litigation support
- Support the assigned markets with end-to-end management of revenue authority queries, requests for information, verifications, audits, and disputes to mitigate exposures.
- Liaise with tax advisors on audit findings where necessary.
- Assist the Senior Manager Corporate Tax, NG & WESA in managing the dispute/appeal/litigation process.
What are we looking for?
ESSENTIAL
- Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Tax, or a related field;
- 3 - 4 years’ relevant work experience at a Big Four accounting firm and/or in a finance/tax position in industry; this should include at least 1 year of tax-specific work experience;
- Working knowledge of a corporate tax system, for both direct and indirect taxes;
- A good understanding of corporate tax accounting, including deferred tax;
- Conversant with uses of common IT software;
- Excellent project- and time-management skills;
- Attention to detail;
- Ability to work effectively with members of other teams, as well as external parties; and
- Strong communication skills with the ability to explain complex tax issues in a clear and concise manner.
