British American TobaccoRomaniahas an exciting opportunity for a VAT Manager – Europe (AME)in Bucharest.
This role is responsible for managing VAT compliance, reporting and related statutory obligations for a portfolio of BAT entities across Europe and Hong Kong. The successful candidate will ensure VAT returns, payments and reconciliations are completed accurately and on time, while helping the business manage VAT risks and maintain strong controls. The role also supports business change, process improvement, automation and readiness for evolving digital tax and reporting requirements.
Your key responsibilities will include:
- Manage end-to-end VAT compliance and reporting for a portfolio of BAT entities across Europe and Hong Kong.
- Prepare, review and submit VAT returns and related statutory reports, including Intrastat and Standard Audit File for Tax, where applicable.
- Ensure VAT payments, account reconciliations and compliance activities are completed accurately and within required deadlines.
- Identify, monitor and help mitigate VAT risks, supporting a robust control environment and clear governance.
- Provide practical VAT support to Finance, Commercial, Supply Chain, Procurement, Legal and other business teams.
- Coordinate with external tax advisors, compliance providers and tax authorities on VAT registrations, audits, enquiries and assessments.
- Support indirect tax process improvements, automation initiatives, enterprise system enhancements and data quality improvements.
- Contribute to readiness for new VAT, electronic invoicing, digital reporting and real-time reporting requirements across multiple jurisdictions.
What are we looking for?
- Professional tax or VAT qualification and 5–7 years of relevant indirect tax experience, ideally in a multinational environment or professional services firm.
- Strong knowledge of European and international VAT principles, including cross-border transactions, imports, exports, chain transactions, place of supply rules and VAT recovery.
- Experience managing multi-country VAT compliance and reporting obligations across European and other international markets.
- Experience supporting VAT audits, tax authority enquiries and dispute resolution processes.
- Good understanding of financial processes and enterprise resource planning environments; hands-on experience with SAP would be an advantage.
- Exposure to VAT automation, tax technology, electronic invoicing, real-time reporting, Standard Audit File for Tax or other digital tax compliance requirements.
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to explain complex VAT topics clearly to non-tax audiences.
- Ability to prioritise competing demands, work under pressure and deliver high-quality results within tight deadlines.
