British American Tobacco Poland has an exciting opportunity for a Area Head of Customs & Excise Governance in Warsaw, Poland
What are the key objectives and expectations from this role?
To lead and manage the customs and excise governance of the Area. This includes supervising customs and excise risks and disputes, evaluating related financial reporting, providing strategic advice across the Area, and ensuring that the framework of processes, controls and governance set by the Group Indirect Tax function is embedded in the organisation.
Your key responsibilities will include:
- Support the Group Head of Indirect Tax to ensure alignment to the Group’s Tax Strategy & Management Guidelines, Excise Management Guidelines, and relevant policies and standards and also in the assessment of indirect tax technology requirements, including ERP capabilities, and with deployment of solutions and tools!
- Ensure that a framework of controls, processes and governance is in place and enforced such that BAT’s operations are conducted in compliance with customs and excise laws and regulations. This framework will govern customs and tax classification, licensing, supporting documentation and records, filing returns/declarations and timely payment of duties due (while improving cash flow efficiency);
- Internal review and audit of local departments on the execution of tax policies, guidelines and standards implementation;
- Support end markets with all significant / contentious / strategic customs and excise audits across the region.
- Strategic oversight and management of external advisors;
- Manage and report risks in the region, highlighting where the business requires provisions for emerging issues;
- Chair and co-ordinate bi-annual Area Indirect Tax committees;
- See opportunities and drive continuous improvement regarding customs and excise management process and systems. Challenge the status quo;
- Act as strong enforcer of ‘Do the Right Thing’ value system in all interactions with the business.
- Ensure continued professional development by keeping up to date with tax law proposals and changes, and educating team and other BAT colleagues as vital; Support in deploying training to the business;
- People development mentor across both direct and indirect reports
What are we looking for?
- Excellent leadership and team member management capabilities;
- Knowledge of / experience in effective management of third-party partners in the delivery of their services (e.g. third-party customs clearing agents/brokers, logistics partners, warehousing companies, etc. who handle BAT’s excise goods)
- Ability to develop and maintain relationships with tax authorities;
- Good communication skills
- Ability to work under pressure and keep to tight deadlines;
- Assertiveness and drive;
- Excellent project- and time-management skills;
- Ability to balance tax technical and commercial priorities;
- Degree-educated with professional accountancy/legal and/or tax qualifications;
- Minimum of seven years’ tax experience in the ‘big 4’ accounting firms, other equivalent multi-national organisations, or customs and excise authority;
- Excellent customs and excise technical and accounting knowledge, understanding of manufacturing and supply chain environments;
- Experience of international tax issues and cross-border transactions;
- Experience of dealing with tax authorities, managing tax audits and defending tax positions;
- A detailed understanding and knowledge of relevant finance tools and systems.
- Experience in Operations Finance, Supply Chain, or similar roles;
- Experience in leading material authority audits;
- Financial and tax data management, analysis, interpretation and insight generation skills;
- General knowledge of the SAP software package.
