The Lead Regulatory Tax Manager plays a critical leadership role within a highly dynamic and multifaceted tax function, overseeing and supporting the company’s compliance with federal, state, and local indirect tax laws and regulations. This role is primarily responsible for managing tax obligations related to marketplace facilitator activities and direct retail partner platforms, with a strong focus on Sales & Use Tax, State Excise Tax, and Property Tax compliance. In addition, the position provides support across other indirect tax disciplines as business needs require.
As a key business partner, the Lead Regulatory Tax Manager collaborates extensively with stakeholders across the organization, providing strategic guidance, technical expertise, and operational support to ensure compliance with evolving indirect tax requirements while mitigating risk and promoting best practices.
Your key responsibilities will include:
- Obtains & maintains various state-required business licenses/permits across the United States [sales/use tax, state excise taxes, etc.].
- Heavy involvement in preparation & submission of monthly, quarterly & semi-annual state sales & use tax returns across the United States.
- Partners with key areas of Company including Finance and Accounting in conducting necessary research required to determine taxability and associated compliance reporting, particularly in relation to sales/use, state excise and property tax compliance.
- Partners with Accounting and other departments as needed to ensure proper recording of indirect tax liabilities and associated payments within Company books and records.
- Assist in evaluation of operating issues to determine appropriate action to ensure continued compliance with Federal, State and Local indirect tax laws and regulations.
- Serves as Company liaison for responding to inquiries from governmental agencies and coordinates any required written and verbal responses to such inquiries.
- Assists in the management of indirect tax compliance audit reviews conducted by governmental agencies.
- Assists in staff growth and development, and provides on-going support, training and direction to the functional units affected by government regulations.
- Focuses on streamlining processes while driving efficiencies through use of best practices in technology.
What are we looking for?
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field, or equivalent relevant experience.
- 3+ years of experience in indirect tax compliance, with direct exposure to State Sales & Use Tax.
- Knowledge of federal, state, and local indirect tax regulations.
- Experience in preparing and filing Sales & Use Tax returns across multiple jurisdictions.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders.
- Experience with SAP and tax technology platforms such as Vertex or Avalara is preferred.
- Detail-oriented, diligent, and able to thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative environment
