REPORTS TO: Senior Regulatory Engagement Manager based in Kenya
This role is responsible for supporting the Head of Regulatory Affairs Kenya and the Senior Regulatory Engagement Manager Kenya in fulfilling their mandate and includes collaboration with the Centre of Excellence (COE) on local trends concerning regulatory, fiscal, AIT (Anti Illicit Trade) and Business Communication and Sustainability issues.
Your key responsibilities will include:
- Support the local execution of the fiscal strategy whilst being cognisant of local business and reputational risks. This includes:
- Monitoring the local excise and trade environment
- Obtaining a general understanding of the research on demand, tax revenues, illicit trade and standard process in other markets.
- Supporting the formal submission process to the National Treasury, Kenya Revenue Authority, parliamentary committees and other relevant Government ministries, Agencies and State Departments
- Preparing robust local analysis that will feed into advocacy for the delivery of key messaging to the National Treasury, Kenya Revenue Authority and relevant parliamentary committees.
- Support the local execution of the regulatory strategy whilst being cognisant of local business and reputational risks. This includes:
- Monitoring the local regulatory environment covering BAT’s product portfolio,
- Supporting the Senior Regulatory Manager Kenya in developing, in collaboration with the COE, the local regulatory engagement strategy and providing support in respect of the corresponding communication plan.
- Supporting the formal submission process to local regulators
- Preparing robust local analysis and advocacy materials, for the delivery of key messaging to regulators.
- Support the local execution of the AIT strategy developed by the COE whilst being cognisant of the local business, security and reputational risks involved. This includes:
- Collecting information for appropriate reviews and evaluation of illegal competitor’s activities
- Providing assistance in the procuring of local advocacy to support BATs position
- Performing administrative activities (risk management, payment of invoices etc) in respect of consultants, professional service providers and champions
- Supporting the deployment of local engagement and campaign communications
- Support the implementation of BAT Kenya’s internal and external communications strategies including through the provision of regular business information using all relevant communication channels and medium. This includes:
Management of ExternalCommunications by supporting the Senior Regulatory Engagement Manager in:
- Development and improvement of local media relations in line with BAT Kenya strategy and engagement through two-way communication with the media in order to respond and provide feedback to any queries.
- Development and circulation of circulate press releases and news articles about company activities.
- Representation of the company in media interviews, press conferences and events.
- Implementation of all media relations programmes to ensure effective communication of corporate messages.
- External collaborator engagement especially with key partners that highly influence our operations and regular communication about updates on business activities.
- Managing and supervising the BAT Kenya website.
Management of Internal Communications by supporting the Senior Regulatory Engagement Manager in:
- Deliver corporate information to the entire workforce by consistently using internal communication methods. This keeps teams current on key business activities.
- Leading all internal communications through business briefings and conferences. I also use emails, MS Teams, bulletin boards, newsletters, brochures, and other relevant channels to ensure information is clearly and efficiently shared with employees.
- Corporate brand management by understanding the rational aspects of the corporate brand and effectively applying the corporate visual identity in the business.
- Communication of major policies/ operations communications to all employees and driving culture change through effective communication of business principles across the company.
- Supporting the local deployment of campaign/advocacy materials and proposals to support BAT’s position on key issues (including THR).
- Support the BAT Kenya representatives in associations where BAT is a member
- Carry out support tasks concerning local media positions, media training, and the company spokesperson role as appropriate.
- Provide support activities for annual and sustainability reporting.
What are we looking for?
- Educational Background: University Degree
- Government and Corporate Affairs Expertise: Minimum of two years’ proven experience in a public policy or corporate affairs.
- Corporate Communications Expertise: Minimum of two years’ proven experience in corporate communications/media management role.
- Stakeholder and Network Management: Confirmed ability to work with third-party networks and diverse partner groups to drive organizational objectives.
- Industry, Regulatory, and Fiscal Expertise: General understanding of the tobacco/nicotine industry, including its regulatory environment and fiscal frameworks (added advantage)
- Commercial Savvy: business understanding, commercial awareness, and the ability to resolve problems.
- Influencing and Relationship-Building: Strong influencing, interpersonal, and communication skills with the ability to work with internal and external collaborators.
- Problem-Solving Ability: Proven ability to solve simple problems and propose solutions to management
- Policy Work: Good understanding of regulatory and fiscal policy structures in Kenya.
- Content Creation: Proficiency in developing simple messaging frameworks and content that align with corporate objectives and collaborator expectations.
- Resilience and Agility: Ability to perform effectively under pressure, manage multiple priorities, and deliver results within tight deadlines.
- Collaborative and Consultative Approach: Proactive, adaptable, and comfortable working in ambiguous or evolving environments..
